Weird day couple of days on Tumblr. Two beers deep and bored at a bar with my computer, I made this silly picture of Justin Timberlake with some text on it. Thought it was funny, posted, forget it. Woke up the next day and there were something like 7,000 notes. Holy hell? Usually my posts are the functional equivalent of one hand clapping. Since then it’s gone berserk, been promoted on the Tumblr #lol and #fashion pages and is up to something like 54 THOUSAND notes. Tumblr really, really likes JT; I’m not taking any credit.

Anyway, I think this comment I made to Jess about Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter is way funnier because THAT MOVIE IS BONKERS, but it only has 5 notes. So I am obviously wrong. Hello new followers!

Putting aside the fact that quoting Snoop Dogg to a brilliant, award-winning author is basically everything that is wrong with Millennials, this short interview with George Saunders on the Paris Review blog is really lovely. It’s not very pull-quotable, but here’s an interesting thought about modern language and valuing both high-brow and low-brow culture:

I find it exciting to think that whatever language the culture produces can be grist for the literary mill - well, and that it would HAVE to be, you know? And that goes for extra-linguistic things too - whatever thought patterns are manifesting out there, have to be interesting to us as writers. Part of “growing” ourselves as writers (there…there’s a mod usage there) is to keep expanding our vision of “what is art” outward to accommodate whatever is…out there, in reality.

Also he talks about Nicki Minaj, which is worth the price of a click alone!

Alright folks. In Boston, you root for The New England Patriots, and you eat New England clam chowder, the white kind. But Luke’s is in Manhattan, where we root for the Giants, and where we eat Manhattan clam chowder, the red kind. That said, we’re calling this a DEAL for the simple reason that the lobster rolls rock and if you’re someone who actually “likes” this soup you’ll save $8. But still. Something’s not right about this. Stay tuned for a emergency BAD DEAL RULE to be issued within the coming minutes.

Yesterday, My Brother’s Book, Maurice Sendak’s tribute to his brother, Jack, was posthumously published. Says Tony Kushner, “I really feel that the book is a goodbye from him to everybody who loved him—which was a lot of people.”

And here is our interview with Sendak, which is among the most personally effecting interviews in our archive. At least for us.

Currently listening to the linked interview with Sendak. We tend to focus on his cantankerous, irascible interviews because, well, it’s fun to watch a curmudgeon tear down the world. This interview is different, though. He’s open and positive and thoughtful and poetic. He cries multiple times, or maybe he never really stops crying. It’s great and something I’ll be thinking about for a while.
