Today in Blatant Lawyer Protectionism
“The state licensure of attorneys was established to protect the public from those untrained and uneducated in the practice of law,” Butsch said. The preparation of wills and other legal documents “may seem simple to a layman, but they aren’t,” he added. “There are consequences of signing a will …and those consequences can be great and they can’t be properly communicated by a company over...

Attention: Legal Humor Ahead
ifihadalawschoolband: The Gravamen Genre: Folk Rock Look: Bow ties, fedoras and suspenders. Signature Song: The Crux of Your Complaints BOOM!  Started a new Tumblr with my friend, the JCGastronomer, as an outlet for all our witty law jokes.  The premise is what we would name our hypothetical law school band.  Law school bands are a thing, FYI. Just watch How I Met Your Mother.  Probably...

The Apartment Gardening Project: Where do food... →
apartmentgardeningproject: I’ve noticed a few belle pepper flowers that bloomed, hung around for a while, then shriveled up and fell off the plant. This morning I decided to investigate…why aren’t my food babies growing? Internet told me that I might have a pollination problem. I just noticed the same problem on my pepper plants this weekend. I’ll give this a try on the plants tonight! ...

Let others grow veggies in your backyard if you...
Just found out about this cool organization: Next Door Organics!  They are developing a land network in NYC and LI by identifying open outdoor spaces (empty lots, backyards, etc.) where they can plant food gardens.  If you let them use your land, they will do all the work, and you get a share of the proceeds AND the satisfaction of growing food.  Pretty much a win, win, win as far as I can tell. ...

Best Beer Bar in NYC according to Metromix (whoever they are)!  Also ranked #1 in my heart for their amazing hush puppies and mussles (not together…yet).  Oh, and the proximity to my house is pretty amazing.

Thieves!
powells: The five most stolen books, according to Publisher’s Weekly. We’ve got our eyes on you, Bukowski fans. I thought Post Office was pretty great, but I’m pretty surprised the most stolen books are by Bukowski.  I would have thought it was something like Clockwork Orange or Brave New World—dystopic but widely-known enough for every disaffected teenage boy to want a copy. ...

Ugh.
Watched a senior DOJ attorney pick his nose and eat it during a proffer session today. Just….no words.

The Merits of Conservative Dressing: Part 1 of...
I was wearing a suit on the way to work today—black with a shirt underneath going up to my neck.  Needless to say, very unsexy but professional.  Standing next to me was a woman about my age in a tiny skirt and tank top.  The Hasidic guy sitting in front of her, diagonal to me, asked me if I wanted to sit.  Sure thing, buddy!  So he gets up, I sit down, and the sexily dressed woman looks...

NPR needs more nuanced legal reporting. →
nprfreshair: “There really have been very few criminal prosecutions [of companies] and there has been no criminal prosecution of a senior executive from a major bank or financial company related to the financial crisis.” — Louise Story, from the New York Times, explains how guidelines issued by the Justice Department in 2008 have allowed prosecutors to take a softer approach to corporate...

Jesus Google Bomb.
What I googled: “3(a)(35).” What I was hoping to get: SEC Act Section 3(a)(35) re: investment discretion definition. What I actually got: Mark: 3:35 “Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.” What I take away from this: Jesus > SEC. If I drafted God’s will, figuring out my share would be a trusts & estates exam question...
